1. Jordan Pines
Located about midway up the canyon this spot features a large parking area and easy to access spots.
- The Look: Towering pine trees and large open meadows that frame the surrounding granite peaks
- Key Features: A charming wooden bridge and board walk
2. Silver Lake (Brighton)
Located at the very top of the canyon, this is the crown jewel for "alpine" vibes.
- The Look: A high-mountain lake surrounded by granite peaks and dense evergreens.
- Key Features: A flat, mile-long wooden boardwalk that circles the water, making it incredibly accessible.
3. Storm Mountain Picnic Area
If you want something more rugged and "Western," this is your spot.
- The Look: Dramatic, jagged quartzite cliffs and massive boulders.
- Key Features: A small bridge over the rushing creek and a "hidden" feel despite being right off the main road.
A Note on Canyon Logistics
When planning a session in Big Cottonwood, remember that the canyon is a protected watershed. This means Rufus has to stay home—dogs are strictly prohibited to keep our drinking water clean. For the best results, aim for a weekday shoot. This canyon is a local favorite, and the popular trailheads can get crowded on Saturday afternoons. If you’re chasing that iconic golden hour glow, plan to start your session about 90 minutes before the actual sunset time; because of the steep canyon walls, the sun 'sets' behind the ridges much earlier than it does in the valley below.
