Top Little Cottonwood Locations

1. Albion Basin (Alta)

This is arguably the most famous photography spot in the entire state of Utah during the summer months.

  • The Look: Rolling alpine meadows flanked by Devil's Castle and Mt. Superior.
  • Key Features: Famous for its wildflower explosion (Lupine, Paintbrush, and Sunflowers) which usually peaks between late July and early August.
  • Note: There is a parking fee during peak season, and it gets incredibly crowded. Going on a weekday or sunrise is best. If you want to avoid the parking fee, park below the pay booth and hike in, there's lot of great spots along the way. The Albion Meadows trail is 3.6 miles round trip.

2. Temple Quarry Trail

Located right at the mouth of the canyon, this is a fantastic "all-season" backup.

  • The Look: Massive granite boulders, rushing water, and towering cottonwood trees.
  • Key Features: It’s a paved, easy-access loop. The giant granite slabs provide a clean, neutral background that makes skin tones look amazing.

3. Tanners Flat

This spot feels like a secret forest tucked away behind the campground.

  • The Look: Dense Aspen groves and dramatic views of the ridge line.
  • Key Features: In the fall, the Aspen leaves turn a neon gold, creating a natural glowing canopy perfect for a more woodsy feel.

A Note on Canyon Logistics

When planning a session in Little Cottonwood, remember that the canyon is a protected watershed. This means pets need to stay home as dogs are strictly prohibited to keep our drinking water clean. For the best results, aim for a weekday shoot. This canyon is a local favorite, and the popular trailheads can get crowded on Saturday afternoons. If you’re chasing that iconic golden hour glow, plan to start your session about 90 minutes before the actual sunset time; because of the steep canyon walls, the sun 'sets' behind the ridges much earlier than it does in the valley below.
